Names at a glance

  • Tamil: முருங்கை (Murungai); the leaf is murungai ilai, also cooked as murungai keerai
  • English: moringa, drumstick tree
  • Botanical: Moringa oleifera Lam. (family Moringaceae)
  • Part used in AVM’s powder: leaf

One tree, many foods

In Tamil kitchens a single tree gives several different foods: the long green pods, the drumsticks, go into sambar and curries; the leaves are cooked as greens; and the flowers are eaten too. The scientific genus name Moringa itself comes from the Tamil word murungai. It helps to know which part you are buying: AVM Herbals’ powder is made from the leaf only, not the pods.

In the AVM Herbals range
